Crowned Heads by Mr. FLOWERHeadZ

Growing up listening to Caribbean legends and sharing his great-grandmother’s love for horticulture, artist Hugh Findletar has found a way to incorporate many passions into his glass works, made by master glass blowers in the furnaces of Murano. Inspired by his childhood in Jamaica, his baroque FLOWERHeadZ are portrait busts of friends and muses, but also vases to fill with seasonal flowers.

Every artist has to find their own expression, daring to bring their own story and experiences into the language. In Findletar’s case it’s a life that has taken him from Jamaica to New York City, to discovering glass blowing while traveling in Kenya, to the fashion metropolis of Milano and of course Venice and the heritage craft of glass blowing on the island of Murano. He works with master glass blowers and frequently combines Murano glass with precious metal like gold and silver – but he’s never afraid to add a touch of humor to his work, his round owls, PattoKs, on shimmering perches, have endearing round heads with eyes set like jewels and beaks the color of lipstick.

The vases and FLOWERHeadZ are meant to be used by the collectors and not just to sit on a shelf, a creative and playful ritual and of course a bit of a challenge to follow the artist’s skillful hands. What to aim for? Go for crowned heads of state or escapees from an 18th century fête gallant!
